Opening up with CloZure: Interview

Born in the heart of Enterprise, Alabama, where the raw energy of Harleys collides with the pulsating beats of adrenaline-fueled rock 'n' roll, we have CloZure, who chops it up with an exclusive interview.

Can you tell us about the origins of your band and how you all came together?

Mike C- I started CloZure back in 2012 as a local cover band and it reignited my dreams to do bigger things. As bands do, we have moved through various changes getting to the lineup we have now. These changes finalized with Nolan, our manager, finding Nikollaj after she had parted ways with her previous band, and Zack joining us back in August of this year. Zack, we met while playing a show in Kentucky on our Hand in My heart tour last year when he was with a duo that opened for us. They say the right things happen at the right time to do something that’s meant to be and that’s how I feel about my band, my family now.

What's the story behind your band's name?

Zack- The product of fighting my way out of the local bar band game and making this a career.

Matt- For me it is my closure to write through moments in my life to tie into the moments of theirs.

Mike M- CloZure for me means my last chance of fulfilling my dream.

Mike C- CloZure means many things very personal to each of us and has come to mean an idea of drive, persistence, and who we are.

How would you describe your music and style in a few words?

Nikollaj- Dark, Vampy, Strong, Sexy.

Matt- Emotional, moving from heavy/melodic.

Zack- catchy. Big sexy hooks

What are some of your musical influences and inspirations?

Matt- Thrice, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Tool.

Mike M- 90s to 2000s style. Breaking Benjamin fan.

Mike C- Boston, VanHalen, Tesla, and a lot of the Nu-Metal melodic styles.

Can you share some memorable moments or stories from your journey as a band?

Mike M- Getting messed up after a show and fell asleep in someone’s Subaru. Lol

Matt- Sitting in the recording studio 1979 with Malcom Springer and the band and being pushed to the limit to achieve the best songs we have ever written together.

Zack- Working with Malcolm, he pulled the absolute best out of each of us, but good lord that guy is wild.

What's your songwriting process like?

Nikollaj- I wait until a bandmate or the band shows me a song, and I listen to it for a few days and let my emotions lead me to where I think the vocals and lyrics need to be and go. I ask them to tell random stories or words to pull inspiration.

Mike M- Matt and Mike come up with some riffs. If it’s something that we feel has some potential, we all start adding our parts to see if it works.

Do you collaborate on lyrics and music, or does one member take the lead?

Nikollaj- For music the band takes care of that, a majority of lyrics I take care of however the bandmates do come forth with some lyrics or sometimes I ask them to say random stories or words to pull inspiration.

Zack- Strong collaboration, what we put out musically is done as a whole band, with input from all members, from lyrics to instrumental parts.

Tell us about your latest album or project. What can listeners expect from it?

Zack- Adele/Evanescence bluesy powerhouse vocals, with a heavy modern band behind it all, kicking you in the chest.

Mike M- For CloZure it’s an entire 180. Working with “THE” professionals of the industry has really helped mold our sound into what it is today.

Matt- I think there is a good variety for the listener... From hard hitting rock songs to a beautiful ballad, brilliantly executed by Niko. Her voice can truly fill the room with so much power and emotion.

Are there any specific themes or messages you aim to convey through your music?

Nikollaj- I don’t think our music in general portrays one message or vibe. However, in general our songs do mirror our feelings or life experiences.

Mike C- Each song we write conveys a moment in time that, in that instance, was a life experience for us. If we can make someone feel a connection that is personal to their life or make them remember someone or something special, then that’s magical.

How do you approach live performances and engaging with your audience?

Nikollaj- My main approach is to do the absolute best I can and not only make a fan but add to the family of CloZure. What I love most about live performances is if done well, I can create a special moment that will resonate with whoever forever. Live performances is honestly my favorite part of music, and to give back whatever I can on stage to all the fans is my way of saying thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Zack- I get the zoomies onstage. All smiles the whole time, just having fun and feeling the vibe. It’s all about encouraging the fans to let loose, forget about the day-to-day stress, and just get lost in the moment.

Any upcoming tours or gigs fans should look out for?

Mike C- We have a short headlining tour we’re calling The Resurrection Tour with our good friends The Almas at the end of March starting in Florida and ending in Alabama and another much bigger run with some bigger names later in the year.

What do you hope people take away from your music?

Matt- I hope they find themself lost in a moment of pure emotion.

Mike M- Really just getting people to feel what they need to get through everyday life.

Are there any artists or bands you'd love to collaborate with in the future?

Zack- Chris from Black Stone Cherry with Niko.

Matt- Maybe a collaboration with Benjamin Burnley or Trent Reznor.

What's the most important piece of advice you'd give to aspiring musicians or bands?

Mike M- Don’t let people tell you that you can’t. Screw them! Keep pushing forward!

Nikollaj- Being in music can be hard, it has its ups and downs and can really beat you up sometimes. But if you love and use your emotions for inspiration and never do anything or quit anything because of someone/something. Do it for your sanity, happiness, and closure.

Mike- Hard work always pays off. Don’t make excuses and don’t quit or the only person to blame is yourself.

Share a fun fact or an interesting tidbit about each band member.

- Zack once wrestled a bear on his initial interview with the band….. it’s on film really.

- Mike C will always forget his pick when he gets on stage.

- Nikollaj has no limit to her energy and drive. That battery never dies.

- Mike M disappeared after a show in Ohio when we were opening for Texas Hippie Coalition and didn’t find him until the next morning.

- We’re pretty sure Matt removes his skeleton before a show so he can move like Gumby…. CloZures new single "The Devil Effect" premieres February 9th featuring their new singer Nikollaj -
